44th ANNUAL SIDEWALK SALE AND EXHIBITION
43rd Annual Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition Winners Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts officials and sponsors presented over $17,000 in awards to artists in its 2009 Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition, on Saturday July 11, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at an award ceremony on the Festival’s Allen Street stage. Sidewalk Sale Coordinator Pam Lautsch and President of the Festival’s Board of Directors Sally Kalin emceed the brief and informal awards ceremony. The top prize, the Arête Best of Show Award, was presented by Linda Gall to Lancaster, PA resident and ceramic artist Mariko Swisher. Linda and Blake Gall of Boalsburg make this award possible, which includes a cash prize of $2,500. The juror’s for this year’s Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition were illustrator Mark Bender, Pittsburgh, PA; museum publication editor, Barbara Bradley of Cleveland, OH; ceramic artist Sandi Pierantozzi, Philadelphia, PA; jeweler Todd Pownell, Cleveland, OH and printmaker Sarah Rishel, Atlanta, GA. The Fine Arts Award, worth $1750, was given to printmaker Mitch Lyons of New London, PA
The Lautsch Family Award of Excellence was presented to glass artist Michael Mikula of Cleveland. Awards of Excellence carry a cash prize of $850. Other exhibitors receiving Awards of Excellence were: The following exhibitors received Awards of Distinction, worth $675: The following artists received merit awards, worth $500; The Anne Layng Award of Merit was presented to Stephen Sebastian, High Point, NC (Painting) David Bryce, North Egremont, MA (Sculpture); Jenny Pope, Ithaca, NY (Printmaking); Horace and Shawn Thomas, Belton, TX (Leather) The Frost & Conn, Inc. Booth of Distinction Award was presented to Karen Klinefelter, Burlington, NY. This award is worth $250.
The juror’s for this year’s Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition were illustrator Mark Bender, Pittsburgh, PA; museum publication editor, Barbara Bradley of Cleveland, OH; ceramic artist Sandi Pierantozzi, Philadelphia, PA; jeweler Todd Pownell, Cleveland, OH and printmaker Sarah Rishel, Atlanta, GA.
Mark Bender’s meticulously crafted images have been featured in corporate annual reports, advertising campaigns, CD covers, children’s books, murals, and posters. Holding a graduate degree in illustration from Syracuse University, he is also a faculty member at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Bender is a member of both the Pittsburgh and New York Society of Illustrators, and has been recognized by the society for professional excellence.
Barbara Bradley completed her undergraduate education in plastic and graphic arts at the University of Illinois Chicago and has done graduate work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Bank Street College of Education in New York. She Bradley has more than twenty-five years’ in arts publishing at the International Exhibitions Foundation (now Art Services International), the Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Sandi Pierantozzi operates a functional pottery school in Philadelphia, where she began her education at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, and continued it at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She has taught extensively at some of America’s most prestigious craft schools, including Arrowmont School of Art and Crafts, Gatlinburg, TN; Penland School of Crafts, Penland, NC; and Anderson Ranch, Snowmass Village, CO.
Todd Pownell began his jewelry studies at the Bowman Technical school in Lancaster, where he gained an in-depth exposure to all jewelry making techniques. During his training he also completed the GIA Graduate course in Gemology. He is the co-owner of Tap Studios in Cleveland which offers professional classes in all jewelry techniques including soldering, stone setting and wax carving.
After Sarah Rishel earned an undergraduate degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology she embarked on a career as a graphic designer. However, her real calling was as a printmaker and she became a full time etcher over twenty years ago.
She has participated in gallery exhibitions and prestigious juried art festivals such as the Cherry Creek Festival, Denver, CO; the Plaza Art Fair in Kansas City, MO the Kansas City, MO; and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. She has been a board member of the National Association of Independent Artists, the advocacy group.
