The 24” by 36” inch colorful poster is free and can be picked up at several local businesses, including: -Central Pennsylvania Convention and Visitors Bureau -HUB-Robeson Center Desk, Penn State Campus -Penn State Federal Credit Union -Hintz Family Alumni Center, Penn State Campus -Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts For over 20 years, Sommese has designed the colorful posters for Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, with the entire collection on display in the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park Campus of The Pennsylvania State University. This year’s poster was made possible by grant support from the Centre County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and Centre County Commissioners. The festival will take place from July 8th to July 12th in downtown State College on the Penn State Campus. Based in Orlando, Florida, Sunshine Artist covers America’s outdoor art and craft festival industry. The Sunshine Artist Poster Contest was started in as a way to recognize the efforts of shows to market themselves using original artwork. Posters are an opportunity for the sponsoring festival make a statement about the importance of art in their community. The jurors for the contest were Joyce Shelton, and award winning designer and illustrator from Altamonte Springs, Florida; James Lussier, supporter of visual and performing arts in the central Florida area; and Donne Bitner, faculty member in the Painting and Drawing Department at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida. Commented juror Joyce Shelton, “It’s big. It’s whimsical. It says something’s happening.” Lanny Sommese has designed the poster for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts for over twenty years. He currently Department Head and Professor of Graphic Design in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State, where he is also a Fellow of the Institute for Arts and Humanistic Studies and the Alliance Graphique Internationale, an elite international group of graphic designers based in Zurich, Switzerland. The 2008 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts Poster was sponsored by Corvette America, of Milroy, the nation’s leading aftermarket supplier of Corvette parts and accessories. An entire collection of Sommese’s posters for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is on display in the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park Campus of The Pennsylvania State University. The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is partially funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. 25 May, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Rick Bryant, Executive Director (814) 237-3682 The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts will host an opening reception for the Images 2009 exhibition in the Robeson Gallery on the University Park campus of Penn State on Friday, June 12. The reception will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The Robeson Gallery is located on the ground floor of the HUB-Robeson Center. There is convenient parking located in the HUB Parking Deck, which can be entered from Shortlidge Road. The Images 2009 exhibition features work in painting, drawing, watercolor, photography, fiber, and other media by artists living in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The work in the show was created within the last three years. Judith Hansen O’Toole served as juror at this year’s event. Ms. O’Toole has served the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania since 1993. She has also published works in the field of 19th and 20th century American art in journals, museum catalogs, and books. As a juror, Ms. O’Toole looks for “strong composition, exceptional use of color (or the lack thereof), technical skill, works that are conceptually interesting, thought provoking or contemplative, and honest.” The award winners will be announced at the opening reception. Images 2009 is supported in part by a grant from the Revington Arthur Foundation. The 2009 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts will be held in downtown State College and on the Penn State campus from July 8 through July 12, 2009. July 8 will be Children’s Day, and the award winning Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition opens on July 9 and continues through July 12.
