Associated American Artists: Art By Subscription
June 5–August 7, 2011
This exhibition features more than seventy prints created for the Associated American Artists, an organization established in New York City in 1934 by publicist and art promoter Reeves Lewenthal. The association helped create a market for the aptly labeled American Scene art movement by disseminating inexpensive original prints to a broad public through mail order and department stores. The prints, which include lithographs, etchings, and wood engravings, depict quintessentially American subjects from rural life and labor to urban entertainment cityscapes.
