Images 2014: The Juried Exhibition of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts

This summer, our juried gallery exhibition, Images, will be going on hiatus. There will be several significant construction projects underway at Penn State’s HUB-Robeson Center and those projects will make access to the Robeson Gallery problematic. So we’re taking this opportunity to do something different.

In recognition of the strong photography that’s been in the Images exhibition, this year we are partnering with the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania to present a juried photography show, Seeing America: Centre County in Photographs.

The exhibition will include photos of Centre County taken on or after January 1, 2013 in a variety of categories: people, places, things, created images, and panoramas. Entrants, who must be 16 years of age or older, may live anywhere, but the subject of their photos must be located in Centre County. The show will be juried by Barbara Houghton, professor of art, Northern Kentucky University. We will send you an application to the show shortly.

The exhibition will hang at the Art Alliance, 818 Pike Street, Lemont, PA from June 30 through July 13, during the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. The exhibition is part of a series of Seeing America activities made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Other activities supported by the NEA include a performance by the internationally known Ensemble Galilei and an exhibition at Penn State’s Palmer Museum of Art.

On Saturday, July 12, we will present two performances by Ensemble Galilei of First Person: Seeing America. This work features Ensemble Galilei performing to large projected photographs from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art with narration by actors Lily Knight and Rob Nagle. The photographs are by internationally known photographers including Alfred Stieglitz, Walker Evans, and Ansel Adams. The accompanying narration is from internationally known authors including John Muir, Langston Hughes, Damon Runyan. These performances will take place at the State Theatre, West College Avenue, State College, on Saturday, July 12, 2014.

Penn State’s Palmer Museum of Art will present a photography exhibition that will be entitled, Seeing America: Photographs from the Permanent Collection. This exhibition, organized and curated by Dr. Joyce Robinson, examines the rich fabric of people and places that constitute America as captured by notable photographers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Photographers featured in the exhibition include Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, William Henry Jackson, and Eliot Porter. The show will hang in the museum galleries from May 20 through August 10, 2014.

We appreciate all the great work in a variety of media that’s been in Images throughout the years, and hope both artists and audience members will join us in this new venture.
