Juror's Statement
Jurying a regional exhibition is an exciting and daunting task. The excitement comes from having the opportunity to view hundreds of works across disciplines by artists from near and far (in this instance, throughout the mid-Atlantic region). Selecting a number of that, to me, are the strongest works submitted and that will fit well in the Hub-Robeson Galleries is the challenge. As a curator who focuses primarily on the art of our time, and as a practicing artist, having the privilege to serve as juror is a responsibility I feel appropriately up to the challenge.
Curated projects often have a narrow thematic, historic or other premise, which by nature result in a focused exhibition. Juried shows are open calls to artists, with few limitations but perhaps geographic boundaries and practical considerations such as scale and weight. While the former may deeply investigate a premise, the latter usually serves to broadly represent the artists and their work within the exhibition parameters.
This year's submissions were strong and varied in media, subject and approach. Many works were submitted in Fiber, Mixed Media, Painting, and Photography. Not surprisingly, these categories have the most accepted works. Other categories including Ceramics, Paper, Printmaking, and Sculpture had few to no works submitted. (Mid-Atlantic artists working in these categories take note: this is a call to submit in 2011!)
From artists informed by current art issues to those creating in long-standing folk traditions, from subjects ranging from mystical to bawdy, and from works of art that are aesthetically subtle and delicate in execution to those bold and dramatic, "Images 2010" represents the breadth of works submitted to this juror.
Visitors: I invite you to slow down and take the time to look closely and enjoy the fine work of artists from your region. Thank you to all artists who participated, and congratulations to artists whose works were accepted, and especially to award winners.
