Each year, the Arts Festival hangs over one hundred banners over the Festival route. Since each of these banners was once an entry in our Banner Competition. There’s plenty of time to join the fun and enter our 45th Banner Competition.
Entries are judged based on originality, craftsmanship and overall design. Cash prizes are award in three categories: professional, general, and youth.
Our 2011 Banner jurors are Kim Horn, Laura Millard, and Mary Moyer.
Kim Horn has lived around the corner from the Arts Fest for 11 years and always enjoys the front row seat to the hoopla. Her fine arts cred is low, but her craftiness is high, since she has been knitting and tackling other fiber arts since childhood. Her daughter is very excited to participate in the Arts Fest Kids Day for the first time this year. Kim's day job is as a typesetter for a translation company.
Laura Millard learned quilting, knitting, crocheting and weaving at her grandmother's knee deep in the heart of Appalachia at a time when those were necessary life skills more than art. Her Aunt Vada taught her to sew and since then, Laura has made wedding gowns and bride's maids dresses, men's and women's suits and competition dance costumes. Laura’s also is a jewelry maker, using beads, wire, and polymer clay.
After earning an undergraduate degree at Bucknell University, Mary Moyer taught art to grade school children in a creative arts summer program before she began a career as a family therapist. Art has always been an active part of her life, whether through teaching, creating or appreciating. Mary has experimented in many different modalities of art - including pastels, drawing and fiber arts to name a few.
The jurors will award prizes on the basis of creativity, originality, craftsmanship, durability, and design.
The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts announced award winners in its 44th Banner Competition on Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Laura Millard learned quilting, knitting, crocheting and weaving at a young age and has made wedding gowns and competition dance costumes. Millard is also a jewelry maker. Maggie McConnell of State College, the first junior judge in the competition’s history, brought a new perspective to the judging process this year.
Maura McConnell, the chair of the banner exhibition, is fiber artist living in State College. She said about the competition this year: “We are thrilled with the wonderful response to the banner competition this year, having more banners contributed than in several years past. Our entrants were varied, from youth to professional artists to casual artists treating us to many different mediums and techniques. Collectively joining our past contributors, they provide a colorful canopy swaying above the festival route.” Maura has volunteered with the Festival and at First Night® State College, leading children’s art and craft workshops.
Each year the competition entries join previous years’ banners in hanging above the Festival Route on Allen Street. About 100 banners are hung each year, and the collection continues to grow in variety as new artists enter their creations.
